Movie Review – Selfiee

Movie Review by Rishi Kapoor

A comedy-drama directed by Raj Mehta made under the banner of @dharmamovies is a remake of 2019 hit Malayalam film Driving License.

When superstar Vijay Kumar (@akshaykumar ) lands in Bhopal and wants a driving license urgently to be able to finish the climax of his film and save the producer from incurring losses. His diehard fan, RTO officer Om Prakash Aggarwal (@therealemraan ) is given the task to help the actor, and he agrees to fulfil it without following the usual tedious process and asks for a selfie as a gesture in return. But things don’t go as planned and a misunderstanding leads to their feud becoming prime time news, while the public has a field day with their juicy fight.

Akshay channels the swag of the superstar and imbues it with his inherent simplicity to make Vijay Kumar absolutely relatable. The inside jokes on his punctuality, the image of a family man, and his ability to handle multiple projects at one-time land well. Emraan, who plays a common man excels in the role of a father who is blighted by a star in the presence of his son. Both the leading ladies @nushrrattbharuccha & @dianapenty had not much to do but were decent in their respective roles. @imeghnamalik ’s comic timing and characterization of a small-time small-town politician were spot on. The real surprise for me was Abhimanyu Singh, slaying it in a comical role. A brilliant actor always seen in negative roles was good as a bumbling & struggling actor.

Movie showcases the flip side of being popular and how people easily can change sides under the influence of media. It also throws light on the internal politics of Bollywood and the dangers of unchecked hero worship without making it too preachy.

Director @raj_a_mehta has mastered the art of making family comedy drama with right dose of humor, good music and infact have loved all his films so far (Good Newwz, Jug jugg Jeeyo). The screenplay is engaging without any dull moments and that’s what makes this movie a decent watch that you can enjoy with your family.
