Bill Gates, has found inspiration in, Azim Premji, chairman of Wipro and one of the biggest philanthropist. He had pledged close to Rs 52,750 crore or $7.5 billion recently.
Gates has tweeted, “I’m inspired by Azim Premji’s continued commitment to philanthropy. His latest contribution will make a tremendous impact.”
The funds donated by Azim, will channelized and consumed through the Azim Premji Foundation, which works profusely in the field of education – and also in a few other development sectors. The foundation was launched about a decade back.
The foundation works for improvement in standards of government schools, giving subsidized education to students of Azim Premji University and supporting not-for-profits organisations as well. The grant will benefit over 50 organisations. These organisations work on many issues including domestic violence against women, nutrition and even human trafficking.
As per a report published in The Economic Times, “The foundation will use the returns from Premji’s bequest, including dividends, to fund all activities, as well as new initiatives such as setting up a second university in North India.” Initially, the foundation was focused only education-related activities but in 2014 it expanded its scope of work. Meanwhile Gates wasn’t the only one who took to social media to laud Premji.
Closer home, Kiran Majumdar Shaw, chairperson and managing director Biocon called Premji an “extraordinary philanthropist”. Shaw wrote on Twitter, “Indian Billionaire Azim Premji’s Donation To His Charitable Foundation Rises To $21 Billion – An extraordinary philanthropist”.
